Rear Wheel Bearings

Post by halifaxgroup »

I have a SWB CCKW with split axles. The inner rear bearing should be replaced. The current bearing is SKF 2k 395, made in Sweden. (European return truck, no surprise). I cannot find a crossover to Timkin, National, FM etc. So what is the modern number for this bearing as well as the outside bearing? Also I am missing one of the two inner bearing retainer "seals" which sandwiches the felt grease seal. Page 399, ORD 9 item “O”. Any ideas where I can find these? Frank does not have this particular one. I am thinking of having some made. Thanks in advance. Paul

REMEMBER: you either have 2 roller bearings or two barrell bearings. DO NOT MIX THEM!

I wonder why shouldn't roller and barell bearing shouldn't be mixed ??

getting barrel bearing isn't easy so I guess in the future it is roller bearing we have to live with

I have all these parts available for you. Felt seals and bearings. The bearings are #395 & 394A cup, rear hub inner. Bearing #387 & 382 cup, rear hub outer. Felt seals....front or rear....retainer plates also. More than 1000 NOS items available for CCKW. Just ask.....LL.

"REMEMBER: you either have 2 roller bearings or two barrell bearings. DO NOT MIX THEM"

Doctor Deuce,

I know that it is obviously important not to mix the barrel bearings with the cups of their tapered roller bearing counterparts, and vice versa. However, is it also a bad idea to mix the bearing types on a given hub? For example, a barrel bearing for the inner bearing and a tapered roller bearing for the outer bearing...

One of the outer rear bearings (barrel) on my truck looks a little worn, but the inner is in good shape. Can I just replace the outer with the equivalent tapered roller bearing?

Thanks !!

Best Regards,

Bob

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The hub is either BOTH barrel or roller cones with their respective races.

OK... Thx.... I'll take your advice....

Do you know what the reason was for using the barrel design in the first place ? I would think that this type of bearing would be more expensive to manufacture than the tapered roller design.

In the past, any of the axles that I have worked on always used tapered roller bearings.

Supposedly they self centered and yes I would think they were more expensive to make

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too late..

Just pulled the hubs off of the other side, and the trailing axle had a tapered roller bearing on the outside, and a "barrel" roller bearing on inside.

Not sure how long its been in there. It definitely shows some wear, but nothing to write home about.

Sounds like I should look into replacing the inner bearing with a tapered roller bearing, maybe ?

Best Regards...
