Frame restoration

Post by Nick41 »

I have a cckw apart and want to start to rebuild the axles, brakes, etc. Do you sandblast and prime first or disassemble and complete all repairs then sandblast and paint. Worried about spilling brake fluid, ect on frame after paint. Also this truck has banjo axles, can you get all new seals, or do you have to use nos leather. Any part numbers would be great.
Thanks

Hi there!

As long as you're tearing down the truck, do the blasting and priming first. Sand will get into everything and turn up everywhere you don't want it. You just have to be careful with brake fluid and solvents. Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the help. I was wondering what do you do after you blast and prime the frame as for as repairs that are needed. Such as brakes(going with SS), seals(pinion and outer hub seals, as well as transfercase), brake hoses, etc. My only worry with blasting and priming first would be scratching the primer or damaging it with brake fluid when I do the brakes. Should I just touch any scratches after the repairs are made, or have the area professionally primed again? The local blasting place quoted me a figure in the 375-500 dollar range for blasting and 2 part epoxy primer.
Thanks

In time:Use DOT 4 brake fluid that it don't scratch or damage the priming frame. :D
