Radiator Overflow Coolant Bottle

At the risk of offending the purists, I'd like to fit an radiator overflow coolant bottle to my 1944 CCKW 352. I understand that the DUKW had one fitted. Has anyone tried this, or seen it done ?

It is correctly termed a remote expansion tank. The standard CCKW radiator has by design, sufficient expansion volume in the radiator top tank to not require a remote expansion tank.

A sucessful remote expansion tank installation requires a "double acting" cap on the radiator that allows coolant to be drawn back into the radiator when the temperature is reduced.

A properly sealing radiator cap on the standard WWII radiator cooling system does not require a remote expansion tank. If your system is exhausting coolant out the vent tube in normal conditions the cap is not holding pressure in the radiator.

Most people fail to understand the reason for having a pressurized cooling system with a cap rated at a specific PSI. Remember, for every pound of pressure held in the cooling system (by the sealed radiator cap), the boiling point of the liquid is raised three degrees F. A radiator will operate without a radiator cap but the coolant will boil at 212 Degrees F at Sea Level. The sealed cap allows the system to operate at temperatures above 212 F without boiling.

Understand your cooling system and fix the problem and don't try to add more equipment that won't solve your issue.

Yes your right, I should have referred to it as an expansion bottle, after a long day yesterday I was tired last night and had a senior moment. With all due respect I'm already on-board with all the points you make, but my questions about the DUKW still stand.

Not sure. This subject is still on my list of stuff I want to do/investigate.

Frustrated by the awful weather here in the UK, other things I need to sort on the truck and lack of time due to having to revise for exams
