Chevrolet Transfer into a GMC

Post by Busted Arse Tank co. »

Hi all,
I have been toying with the idea of putting a Chevy transfer in my GMC. My Jimmy will be spending most of it's time on sealed roads, so I think it would be more user friendly on trips etc.
I don't really want to go too much faster but it does give you that option, the main thing though is the engine wont be doing it as hard on the open road and fuel economy should be better.

SO, I was wondering if anybody has got one in theirs and if it's worth doing?
Also are you restricted to the standard Chevy transfer case or can you use the ones out of the drilling set ups with the emergency brake on the back wheels rather than on the drum? I notice where the brake drum and second drive comes out is blanked off and wondered if the drive out of the GMC transfer can be put on in this case?

I have only heard this as a rumor so I'm not sure as to how well it would work, so any input is appreciated!

Cheers.

Yes it will work. A gentleman from NY state wrote an article for my GMC Journal years ago about this. You have to lengthen one shaft. The front I think and the hi-low shifter works backwards.

Hi, thanks for the info.
I'm still not sure if the transfer without the brake drum on the back can be used?? I would assume one would have to be grafted on for the second drive shaft and to actually have a brake. They look similar in the casting so a GMC one may fit but I don't actually know!

Kind Regards.

You have an early "Y" model chevy xfer if it has no parking brake assy on the back.

The later Chevy xfer is what you want
