Front lug nuts

Post by bobc »

I just took a look at the chevys and cckw's on my lot and all of them have inside dual lugnuts on the front tires,Steves article on rims says this is not proper,so are the proper nuts the same as the ones on WC dodges and M series,it seems the half track uses the same thing, are all the Bud wheels the same? I don't think I've ever seen an unrestored chevy or gmc with regular nuts on the front.

The SNLs list 18 ea RH and 18ea. LH of the nuts used on all CCKW, the CCW 6X4 calls for the conventional nuts as seen on Dodge
Go to a Chev 4X4 Parts list, and you will find that the Front wheels are double nutted as on the rear, (just in case) Funny with wartime steel shortage, they did that, but it at least standardized the parts.

After seeing the 3 Budd M/F lugs that pulled thru the wheel, I am only using the single wheel lug nuts on the front. Your mileage may vary. Had I lost a wheel on the Bomb Truck... Lets just say that someday I will stencil the word "DEATH" on the windshield at the bottom in front of me!

Steve, if the inner type nuts worked through the wheels, it is a sure sign that your wheels have had loose lug nuts at some period in the past 60 years, and they allowed the holes to enlarge. They really are not safe for further use.CCKW wheels with worn holes should be retired for use as stands for mailboxes, or as I did with one, it was burried and used as a form for concrete to anchor my boys basketball setup.

Lug nuts

Post by bobc »

I was looking at the rims and lugs and there isn't a whole lot of meat on those inside lugs,I imagine it wouldn't be noticeable if a little was wore from both surfaces, ending with a big problem. Of all the CCkW's and chevys, 6 total, only the open cab had all the big lug nuts on the front rims. Now if this stinking rain would hold off for two weeks I might be able to get them home,I'm like a kid at Christmas knowing what I got but can't play with it.

Hey Doctor D, I think it is time to invest in some wheels. I just looked at the Lug nuts that you now use on front, and if the holes are as worn as you say, those nuts are only bearing on the 6 points of the Hex Nut, and not on the champhered edge that is made for that purpose. I am slowly building a supply of safe wheels, and I may have extras by summer.

As I have said to many CCKW people, wheels are and will be the biggest problem with a CCKW long term. Between rotting out and now wearing out ther mounting holes.

Each time you mount them you take just a little metal off.

Does anyone have a NOS wheel? It would be interesting to get a good measurment for reference. Are the 4X4 chevy wheels the same as CCKW's.Bob

I don't ever recall seeing NOS wheels for a CCKW/Chev at least in the USA.

I look for front wheels. They are usually the best because the knuckle seals have failed at some point and 'lubricated' them to prevent rusting.

wheels

Post by bobc »

On all the stuff I've ever drug home I have never had a wheel rusted out,we just don't get enough moisture,I've pulled wheels with tires from creeks, where they have been dumped to prevent erosion, and most still have paint on them,my prblem is finding wheels that aren't bent and mangeled,we have alot of rocky ground that these trucks operated on and they weren't gentle. As these rims were Budd rims I assume that they are built to a standard dimention, you should be able to make a GO- NO GO gauge to determine the correct hole opening and angle. If it ever dries out enough I have 4 trucks worth or rims to go through and determine what is good and what is junk,it would be nice to have some idea what I'm looking at. Bob.

One will not find NOS wheels for the CCKW or G-506, as they have been obsolete for many years. Good used ones do show up. The holes do not usually get worn if kept tight, but will distort out if the nuts are loose. The centers are extremely hard, and normal installation and removal over the years usually has little effect. I will have a few extras by summer.

Like they say in Real Estate "Location, Location, and Location!" Out of 100+ wheels I've seen, only 8 to 10 were bent, cracked, or worn out. I sold 10 to a guy from PA at the Alameda Conv. He was overjoyed with them. He told a friend and I sold 10 more. Are good rims really that rare on the east coast?

Hey, I sold 20 rims and made $500 :D I thought $25 each is good for common '42 & '43 dated rims. If I can close the deal on the trucks at the farm, I'll have about 300 rims. So 300 rims x $25 = $7500  I think I'll become the CCKW "Wheel King"

If you're out this way, I'll site you up with rims. All joking aside, we don't have a big problem with rust-outs or worn-out rims. One farmer told me that his CCKW hauled 10 tons of corn till the rims cut the sidewalls.

East coast rust

Post by bobc »

Chris,I can only assume you haven't spent much time back east,we are spoiled out west, stuff dosen't even have to be sitting on the ground to rot out, they can't keep new cars from rusting out let alone 60 year old stuff. I'm glad my Dad left the Philly area 30 years ago,I really hate working on rusty stuff.

You guessed right. I'm a Califorina Native (I'm even part Mi Wok Indian) 8) I did go back east to Alabama (for 2 weeks) and they have no dirt, just lots of grass. Here we have overnight lows in the 30's in winter and 100+ highs in summer. Some of the trucks I scrapped as rust buckets may have been better than what the New England guys call rebuildable. :(
