Here is another question that might be obvious to you veteran collectors,but has me wondering. Were the wooden handles for the ax, pick and shovel painted,left raw or varnished? I've seen them in all the different finishes,but usually in WW2 photos they are gone so it's hard to really tell.

The 41-A-1277 Ax, chopping, single bit, standard grade, 4lb. was Painted Olive Drab in some specs.
