Help needed....Wipers

Post by Bill_Wolf »

I am progressing on my CCKW as I wait for decent (non rainy and warmer) weather to put some more paint on my Chevy fire truck.

The CCKW is now 12V. alternator powered. A simple conversion except for the custom bracket to hold the delco alternator on.

My Request.....

I need the get the wipers working to get an inspection sticker. There is decent vaccum at the hoses but the drivers side won't move and the passenger side will move about an inch then stall.

Is there any bandaids (fluid) that can be added to these to bring them back to life before I spend $$$ to have them rebuilt.

I will look at Aberdeen for replacements but I am not convinced that 60 year old NOS or new is a better route that rebuilding.

My truck is a 45 Open Cab.

wipers

Post by bobc »

I drove a 48 ford PU for years as my daily driver, and of coarse the wiper didn't want to work too well,an oldtimer told me to shoot a little WD-40 into the line to help soften the leather seal,it worked for a little while,it would probably work long enough to pass inspection. P.S. Bill your hood is on the way.

I have used WD 40 to get them to work for a while. A lot of time there will be a rough spot develope inside the wiper, stopping the felt pad before it reaches the end of the cycle. Take off the wiper, spray some WD in it, then manually operate it back and forth several times, then hook it up and see if it works. Worth a try. :D

A type of light grease was applied to the guts at the Trico factory. I have a supply of NOS Closed Cab Wiper Motors, there are a couple types, and I also have good useable S-583-1 Motors for open cab, for sale or trade.

Motors

Post by Matt »

Hi Joel
I'd be interested in a pair of NOS closed cab wiper motors for my truck.I don't really have anything to trade so if you could give me a price plus shipping to the UK that would be great.I am also after a NOS oil filter housing with the decals on as I know a guy who can repro the decals if I have an original to copy.

Thanks
Matt.

I would be glad to send you motors for the truck, but can you send pics of your old ones, There are several types, and manuals are not clear. Oil Filter has preservative oil in it, along with cartridge, I will have to un pack and disassemble to take out cartridge and remove Oil residue. Although the Filter had plastic plugs in it to seal it, and the boxes are dry after 50 years, I do not want to risk trouble. The oil makes it heavier to ship.

That is what makes this post so great, we are all on the same page with our desires and we have posters like Joel that can supply us with parts, or knows where to find the stuff. Bravo.

Hi Joel
The only problem is the motors fitted now are not correct,I do have the part numbers though if that helps.I will put together a list of everything I need along with part numbers and post it on here.I also have a question, are the fenders on a Chevy the same as a CCKW?

I agree with Armydriver it's great that everyone helps each other out.one thing I've learnt to do is check out what the vintage tractor and stationary engine guys are doing, they are used to getting parts made and can often provide a lot of helpful advice, also they get around looking for their stuff and come across WW2 trucks just as military vehicle collectors somtimes find old tractors and such.who knows if you are really "sad" like me you might even end up collecting old tractors too.......
